Application of value stream mapping in automotive glass replacement services in Brazil

Lean Manufacturing is a methodology recognized for eliminating waste and increasing productivity. Subsequently, its principles were adapted to the service sector, giving rise to the concept of Lean Service. However, the application of Lean in this sector still faces challenges, especially due to the specific characteristics of services. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the practical application of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) in a Brazilian automotive glass replacement company. Utilizing VSM, the study identified waste and proposed improvements that resulted in a significant reduction in the process lead time, achieving up to 60% in future scenarios compared to the current state. The results indicate that the adoption of Lean can generate considerable economic benefits for companies in the service sector, in addition to contributing to business management by providing valuable insights into waste elimination. The research also expands the academic literature by exploring the effectiveness of Lean Service in a context that is still under-investigated, especially in Brazil.
